A beautiful iPhone app to keep track of all the movies you've watched and discover new ones you'll love.
Shortly after releasing the first version of watched, we started working on much needed features and improvements. With the announcement of iOS7, Apple traversed our plans because we didn't like to stop development to throw a half-heartened reskin on top of the existing app, but also wanted to address underlying conceptual and architectural problems to improve usability and set the baseline for planned features.
In addition to developing a new look to complement iOS 7's new design language, I updated the app icon, refreshed error states and UI feedback, provided localization, created new user flows and optimized existing features.
After the app's new direction was pretty much set, I wrote new copy, designed and built a new marketing website and updated our existing marketing materials.
The development is ramping up and we are currently in closed beta.
With iOS7 pushing for clarity and deference, I put more focus on the movie itself, got rid of unnecessary chrome, improved the visual hierarchy and emphasized on movie information and artwork.
With the new discover feature it was crucial to help new and existing users and guide them trough the revamped process of adding movies. I used inline coach marks, to make the onboarding progress as smooth as possible.
One problem I had with our first release was our feedback copy, which ended up beeing far too generic for my taste. With watched 2, I completely rewrote it and designed playful and consistent UI feedback.
I wanted to keep the branding and core concept we established with the first version of the icon. I simplified the glyph, made it a little bit lighter, slightly adjusted the size according to the iOS 7 icon grid and adapted the background to be consistent with the style of the operating system.
I refreshed the website with a much cleaner and content focused look and mostly rewrote the copy to reflect the new features. I purposefully decided against conventional screenshots and clunky devices again and instead added custom illustrations and outline icons to spice up the site. Have a look at the live site and make sure to resize your browser window.
